(Covington, LA)-- Over 420 athletes registered for the 27th Annual Crawfishman Triathlon held May 1-2, 2010, benefitting pre-selected community organizations and foundations, including Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBP). Total donations surpassed last year's increasing the donation to MBP by $1K.

This grueling event includes a 1,000 yard swim, 18-mile bike course and a four mile run. Although rained-out mid way through, Sunday's race was a resounding success with well over 400 athletes and nearly as many volunteers and spectators. Competitors came from near and far to pursue the beckoning call of "Spanish moss in my hand, turn me into the Crawfishman."

Crawfishman event organizers were guests at the staging of a free community breast cancer screening held by MBP's CARE Network in Covington on July 8, to see how gifts from organizations such as theirs are given back to the community to help those most in need.

"Friends, today we met with Jenni O'Neil with Mary Bird Perkins to make the donation of $4,000 to their great organization. We were able to see their mobile screening unit set up in the Lowe's parking lot. It was great to see first-hand what our donation monies go to and the positive impact it has on the community," said Mark Salvetti on behalf of the Crawfishman Triathlon Race Directors (Steve Sperier, Lori Sperier, Kirsty Salvetti and himself) in a message to supporters.

 Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Gonzales, Hammond and Houma. It has comprehensive cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington.
