(Baton Rouge) - The 2010 Mary Bird Perkins Merrill Lynch Open presented by Amedisys and MAPP Construction will mark its 20th year of raising funds for the local fight against cancer. Proceeds from the tournament go directly back to the community - helping Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center further its mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through expert treatment, compassionate care, early detection, research and education.
Twenty years ago, a group of visionaries set out to make a difference in the lives of local cancer patients. Hillar Moore Jr., Clayton Lester, Jay Campbell, Gary Mockler, T.J. Moran, William H. Wright Jr., Gary Sligar, Gerry Lane, Thomas H. Turner, Charles Valuzzo, Bobby Duhe', Dean Alexander and Cathy Thompson were on the original committee that launched this tournament, which has invested more than $1.2 million toward the fight against cancer in Southeast Louisiana.
The Mary Bird Perkins Merrill Lynch Open is affiliated with the Adams Golf Pro Tour Series and remains the only professional golf tournament in the Baton Rouge area. This year's tournament will begin on Wednesday, June 9 and will continue through Saturday, June 12 at Santa Maria Golf Course. There will be more pros, more prizes and more excitement than ever before.
"We are excited to return to Baton Rouge this year," said Gary DeSerrano, Adams Golf Pro Tour Series president. "The new venue will definitely present a challenge for the 130 pros we expect to compete at the Mary Bird Perkins Merrill Lynch Open."
The Amedisys Pro-Am tournament takes place one day before the professional tournament on Tuesday, June 8 at Santa Maria Golf Course. An Adams pro golfer is placed with each sponsored three-man team to play in a "shamble" format. It is an extremely popular event as good food and cold drinks are in abundance as well as great prizes for holes-in-one, closest to the pin and longest drive. Limited sponsorships with pro-am teams are still available. Contact Ethan Bush, Senior Development Officer, at (225) 215-1229 for details.
