Donors & Ambassadors Honored at Mary Bird Perkins'
2010 Celebrate Leadership Reception
(Baton Rouge) -- Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBP) honored special friends and partners in the fight against cancer at its 2010 Celebrate Leadership Reception held May 13 at the Baton Rouge Center.
Welcoming remarks were made by Jerry Jolly, chairman, MBP Board of Directors. Jolly told those in attendance that their support enabled Mary Bird Perkins to carry out its mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through expert treatment, compassionate care, early detection, research and education. He also thanked the physicians of the Southeast Louisiana Radiation Oncology Group (SLROG) for generously underwriting the evening's event.
Before introducing the evening's guest speaker, skin cancer survivor Mr. Dan Wanko, SLROG physician Dr. Sheldon Johnson told donors one of the things he loves about Mary Bird Perkins "is seeing firsthand how donor support helps the Center achieve its vision to operate one of the highest quality radiation therapy treatment programs in the nation."
Following Mr. Wanko's amazing story of survivorship, Todd Stevens, president & CEO, MBP, addressed a number of healthcare topics including why we celebrate those who support us in providing the best treatment and patient experience for those who choose Mary Bird Perkins for their care. Stevens then presented the 2010 Fight Cancer Campaign video for an extremely well-received inaugural viewing.
Brett Furr, Board of Directors, MBP, next came forward to unveil a plan to expand philanthropic efforts and create ambassadors in all Mary Bird Perkins service areas. The Baton Rouge President's Council is based on replicating the model of the existing and successful Northshore Council in creating new volunteers and supporters in each community we serve. "As Mary Bird Perkins continues to grow and expand its service area, so must our advocacy and leadership in those communities," said Furr.
Jerry Jolly closed the festivities by telling the evening's honored guests, "We truly celebrate and thank you -- our leaders and ambassadors in the fight against cancer -- for your commitment, partnership and investment in saving lives.
Guests were then invited on a guided tour of the Center's newest radiation treatment technology and the Early Bird, the Center's mobile medical clinic designed to take free cancer screenings into communities most in need within the Center's 18-parish service area in Southeast Louisiana.
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and Gonzales.
