(Baton Rouge, LA) -- Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center volunteers Lou Fitzmorris and Chuck Stanton have both received the Anna B. Lipsey Memorial Volunteer of the Year award for 2010. Fitzmorris has been a volunteer at the Center's Hammond location for 22 years, since the doors first opened in 1988. "I'm there every Tuesday morning and I love it. I just love it," Fitzmorris said enthusiastically. Stanton, who volunteers at the Baton Rouge location, said, "To work with the staff at Mary Bird Perkins is an honor in itself."
The award, named for the late community activist and one of the Center's original founders, was presented by Anna Lipsey's son, Richard Lipsey, and his wife, Susan, at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, May 7 at the Baton Rouge Country Club. A recognition committee comprised of Center staff and volunteers selects the honorees through a deliberative process that begins with nominations from staff.
Anna B. Lipsey was a founder of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and served as secretary-treasurer of the board from 1968 until shortly before her death in 1985. The Anna B. Lipsey Memorial Volunteer Service Award, began in 1986, is given each year to the volunteer(s) who best exemplifies the volunteer spirit and dedication for which Mrs. Lipsey was known.
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and Gonzales. It has comprehensive cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. These programs are accredited by the American College of Surgeons -- the gold standard for community-based cancer care. For more information visit www.marybird.org.
