(Baton Rouge)- Bumble Lane Spa Retreat at Towne Center hosted its third annual Spa for the Cure extravaganza on October 29, 2009 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. to promote breast cancer awareness during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Staff members at Bumble Lane volunteered numerous hours to organize the event, and service providers graciously donated their time to provide guests with a variety of mini spa treatments. Chef Don Bergeron generously provided delicious hors d'oeuvres, wine and decadent desserts. Proceeds from the evening benefited Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

Tammy Oube, who has attended Spa for the Cure all three years, said cancer-related causes are close to her heart since cancer is a disease that has deeply affected her husband's family. "I believe in attending events to support cancer awareness and research because the dollars raised truly make a difference."

Jan and Katie Lennie attended the event for the first time this year. Jan, whose son is employed at Bumble Lane, said she believes in supporting breast cancer awareness after two of her longtime friends were diagnosed. "Cancer can happen to anyone. This is a cause we need to put at the forefront to make others more aware. We must be advocates and promote awareness, exams and taking care of oneself for our friends, families and ourselves." Katie Lennie, a nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Gonzales said, "Women need to support women and this is a great way to be involved and have a great time. Once you get hooked on the cause, it's hard to ignore." The event sold more tickets this year and raised over $4,000 for the fight against cancer.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Houma and Gonzales. It has comprehensive cancer programs with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge and St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. These programs are accredited by the American College of Surgeons – the gold standard for community-based cancer care. For more information visit www.marybird.org.
