(Covington, LA) – Every year during October, St. Peter Catholic School in Covington holds “Denim Day” – a fund-raiser to help fight breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is the second year in a row that Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center was chosen as the beneficiary of the event.
Information was given to all 500 families of the school about the work of the nonprofit cancer center. Each student was given the option to donate $1 to wear denim to school on October 16 to support the mission of Mary Bird Perkins. The donation for faculty was $5. Together, students and teachers donated over $1,700.00.
The check was presented to Michael Miranda, program manager, Mary Bird Perkins, Covington, on October 23 by Student Council President David Durand on behalf of the St. Peter Catholic School student body. Durand and teachers Jennifer Vaccaro, Sandra English and Liz McKee (English and McKee are also breast cancer survivors) were given a tour of the Covington center by Program Manager Miranda who explained the technology involved in cancer treatment and the various services provided by Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has been fighting cancer for over 35 years with locations in Baton Rouge, Covington, Gonzales, Hammond and Houma. In Baton Rouge, it has a comprehensive cancer program accredited by the American College of Surgeons with Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
